Most Improved Student Home Brought To You By The Reno South Rotary Club Like Us On Facebook Home Mission History The Work Success Stories How To Help MIS Mission A program to provide support for and award scholarships to deserving high school seniors who have triumphed over hardships, demonstrated personal leadership and courage, and yet to show academic improvement. MIS History The Most Improved Student Program in 1996 to recognize students whose pathway to high school graduation proved to be much more difficult than that traveled by most of us. MIS How It Works Each year Reno South Rotary contacts counselors at each high school, including charter and private schools, asking that they nominate students for the Most Improved Student Program. How To Help MIS The success of the program has increased in the last few years with our assistance to these motivated and deserving students to continue their education beyond the first year. Reno South Rotary started the Most Improved Student Program in 1996 to recognize students whose pathway to high school graduation proved to be much more difficult than that traveled by most of us. These students had, or were in the process, of overcoming issues such as significant health problems, abuse, dysfunctional families, homelessness, even brushes with the law – all the while attempting to continue their coursework on the road to graduation. In the world of scholarship “awards”, academic prowess normally triumphs over the successes these students have had in overcoming the obstacles life had placed in their way. Our desire was to reach out to these particular students with an encouraging word and some financial assistance. We wanted to do what we could to encourage these Most Improved Students to continue their education. Each year Reno South Rotary contacts counselors at each high school, including charter and private schools, asking that they nominate students for the Most Improved Student Program. Counselors are most familiar with students, their stories and achievements. The maximum number of Most Improved Students selected is 36. Students sign a contract to attend a leadership training program and to attend an awards luncheon. Five or more of these 36 students receive a $1,000 (or more) scholarship, which can continue if they maintain their grades. These students are awarded their scholarships at a special dinner with Rotarians and guests from area clubs, and a guest speaker.
